Town gearing up for medieval mayhem

Evesham Editorial 8th May, 2024   0

EVESHAM is set to turn back the clocks again for the return of its annual Medieval Market.

The free outdoor event, staged in the historic Evesham Market Square and Medieval Churches of Evesham Abbey, will include knights demonstrating armour and weaponry alongside community stands and an artisan market.

It’s part of the town’s award-winning Battle of Evesham suite of events and takes place on May 18-19.

Battle of Evesham director, Mick Hurst said: “The market has really captured the imagination of local people and draws living history re-enactors from groups across the country.

“Similar to the main Battle of Evesham festival in August, we are also getting international exposure, with tourists from America and Europe placing these medieval themed events in Evesham on their ‘must-see’ list.

“Many local volunteers and organisations have worked hard to put on a great market that provides insights into medieval life and our town’s role in events which shaped the modern world.”

A Living History camp will showcase late-period Vikings and Norman soldiers from the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries and will include iron-forges, leatherworks, wooden crafts, needlework and more.

The Abbey Cloisters and the recently landscaped Nave gardens will be open to help members of the public imagine how the third largest abbey in England used to look in its heyday.

There will also be performances from the official Robin Hood Visitor’s Centre and medieval dancers and minstrels.

Admission to the Evesham Medieval Market is free.

Funds raised through donations will go towards running the Battle of Evesham Festival which will be staged over the weekend of August 3-4.

This ‘spectacular’ re-enactment event is now England’s largest annual Battle re-enactment of the high-medieval period and is now the third largest Medieval Battle re-enactment in Europe.
