Construction of £1.7million 'revolutionary' cycling performance centre is on track

CONSTRUCTION of the £1.7million Cycling Performance Centre at The Valley is on schedule as the next stage of the project begins.

A brick laying ceremony was held at the site last week as construction firm Speller Metcalfe, The Valley owners Eagle One and representatives from Wychavon District Council and Norton & Lenchwick Parish Council gathered to mark the progress.

Building work on the state-of-the-art Boardman Bikes facility is on schedule and is set to be completed by the end of the year.

Due to open in early 2018, the Performance Centre is being designed so it can be used by cyclists and triathletes of all levels, from Olympic, Paralympic and Tour De France Champions to weekend leisure riders.

At the heat of the site will be a cycling specific wind tunnel, the first of its kind in the UK, as well as a range of BikeFit and Physiology suites to enable testing and refinement for individual and team riders, as well as Boardman’s first UK brand store and cycling café.

As well as the Performance Centre, three new retail units are also being built as The Valley continues to expand.

Speaking earlier this year, former Olympic Champion and founder of Boardman Bikes, Chris Boardman, said the new centre will ‘revolutionise’ cycling.

“To be the first to do anything is always a challenge, and for a huge ground-breaking project like the Performance Centre, even more so,” he said.

“People who know me will tell you I tend to play things down and avoid superlatives, but for this project I feel confident in saying when the doors open in early 2018, it will be a genuine game changer for the sport of cycling.

“Making aerodynamic understanding accessible to anyone who want’s to go faster – be they sportive rider or pro athlete – will be nothing short of revolutionary.”
