A WORLD class cycle centre is set to be built at the Valley along with the headquarters of the bike manufacturer founded by Olympic Champion Chris Boardman.
Boardman Bikes have submitted a planning application to Wychavon District Council for the new centre which will feature cutting-edge facilities including a cycling-specific wind tunnel, a performance testing lab, event space and a Boardman concept retail store.
Company bosses said they chose The Valley due to its central location, transport links, how close the centre will be to the town’s facilities and the safe cycling network.
Chris Boardman, Chairman of Boardman Bikes, said it has been a dream of his to create a world class cycling centre.
“Creating a Performance Centre that’s truly accessible to everyone has been a dream of mine since the early 90’s,” he said.
“When I was racing I was able to see the effect of every choice I made. Now that opportunity will be available to all, be they Sportive rider or Tour de France contender.”
Coun Richard Morris, Executive Board member for Economic Growth and Housing for Wychavon District Council, said: “I am absolutely delighted that an iconic international brand like Boardman Bikes has chosen Evesham to develop their new headquarters and innovative centre.
“In addition to being a major economic boost I am confident from our discussions with Boardman that working together and with other groups we will be able to also provide a great legacy to the huge success of GB cycling at the Rio Olympics by helping to boost local cycling participation and activity.”
Paul Goodes, Managing Director of Eagle One which owns The Valley, said: “We are delighted to have secured Boardman as the first tenant for the next phase of The Valley, subject to receipt of planning consent.”
