Town story is Enlightening

Evesham Editorial 13th Jan, 2022   0

THE STORY of how Evesham came to be is being beamed on to one of the town’s iconic landmarks as part of a stunning new light show.

A series of images are being projected on to the Almonry Museum taking the viewer on a journey through Evesham’s rich heritage, from the vision of the Virgin Mary appearing to Eof the swinesherd, through to the Evesham Abbey coat of arms.

Video projection artists Illuminos, who have work displayed across the country and internationally, designed the light show called ‘It Began with Light’.

The light projection was commissioned by Wychavon District Council as part of the next stage of the Enlighten Evesham Creative Lighting Trail.

The Bell Tower and war memorial in Abbey Park are already lit and the aim is eventually to creatively light All Saints and St Lawrence’s churches, as well as the Cloister Arch.

Coun Sue Amor, Mayor of Evesham, officially launched the projection along with a small group of dignitaries including Wychavon District and Evesham Town councillors, as well as those who helped develop the project.

Coun Martin King, executive board member for finance and corporate projects on Wychavon District Council, said:

“This latest light project is a welcome addition to the Enlighten Creative Lighting Trail and I look forward to the remaining part of the project being completed.

“It’s a small example of the work we are doing to support our town centres by adding new and innovative things for people to see and do.”

Coun Rob Adams, executive board member for community engagement, culture and sport on Wychavon council, added: “The new light projection looks fantastic and is a great way to bring the story of Evesham to life and promote the town’s rich heritage to a wider audience.”

People can see the projection show on the Almonry between 6.30pm and 8pm every day until the beginning of March.

Enlighten is a partnership project between Wychavon District Council, Evesham Town Council, The Almonry Museum, St Lawrence’s Church, All Saints Church, The Bell Tower, Abbey Gardens and various interested parties such as Evesham Civic Society and The De Montfort Society.
