HEARTFELT tributes have been paid to a ‘true gentleman’ and Evesham Rowing Club vice-president who has passed away peacefully at the age of 96.

Hubert Martin passed away in his sleep in the early hours of Tuesday morning (October 18) after falling asleep the previous afternoon.

Rowing Club Chairman John Lomas was contacted by Hubert’s son Brian on Wednesday (October 19) and told members of the sad news with ‘great regret and deepest sorrow’.

Hubert was a long standing Vice-President and joined the club in the 1960’s from the Avon Tennis Club which was disbanding.

He was a team tennis player and became tennis captain in the late 1970’s and became John’s vice-captain when he took over from him.

Speaking to the Observer, John described the 96-year-old as a ‘true servant’ who supported John and his wife Sue when they moved to the Vale in 1978.

“Although his health had been declining it was still very sad to hear he had passed away because he was a wonderful Vice President and a true gentleman,” he said.

“He looked after Sue and I so much and was wonderfully supportive when she became tennis captain at the club.”

Together with Hubert, John ran the successful Hereford and Worcestershire Rating Tournament for seven years from 1986.

As well as his Vice President role, Hubert regularly played two sets of tennis twice a week and even a round of golf at the age of 92 until he suffered a small stroke three years ago.

“He tended his prize roses around the tennis courts and was always on hand to help out when necessary,” John added.

“He was a real club man, even though his sport was tennis he was always looking after the club in anyway he could.

Since news of his passing emerged, John said he has been contacted by a number of members past and present who shared their memories of the 96-year-old.

“His passing is a very sad day for Evesham Rowing Club and Sue and I will always think fondly of
him,” he said.

A small family funeral will be held in London while a memorial service to mark Hubert’s life will be held at St Peter’s Church in Bengeworth at a later date.
