How the county council is counting the traffic to plan for the future

TRAFFIC counts designed to gather information to determine future transport provision in Worcestershire are set to be carried out across the county during November.

From this week, contractors of Worcestershire County Council will be preparing to undertake counts in around 550 locations. The traffic counts will be carried out using tubes across the carriageway and remote cameras installed at the side of the road.

The programme of counts will not impact on the day-to-day operation of Worcestershire’s road network as the counters will be installed during off-peak period. The locations of the counts are not being released in advance as this could distort the results.

A County Council spokesperson said: “I am pleased to see traffic counts being undertaken across Worcestershire. The counts will provide valuable information to inform a new countywide transport model that is currently in development.

“Once fully built the transport model will have a variety of uses, including testing the impact of proposed schemes on traffic demand, which is important to attract future funding and investment.

“The model will also support the testing of local development plans on the transport network and will allow us to assess the impact of the pandemic on travel patterns.”

Worcestershire County Council is committed to investing in transport infrastructure throughout the county, unlocking growth and ensuring better connections for people and businesses across Worcestershire and beyond.
