Evesham battle festival promises knights to remember

THE CLASH of steel will be ringing out across Evesham in two weeks when Europe’s largest 13th Century battle re-enactment comes to town.

The Battle of Evesham Festival will see more than 800 reenactors, along with 25 knights from all over Europe, to commemorate 760 years since the historic defeat of rebel baron Simon de Montfort.

An action-packed weekend which runs from August 1 to 3 will feature a living history medieval camp with live demonstrations of cookery and weapons, a grand parade of knights on horseback through the town centre, plus the main battle reenactments.

New for 2025 are several additions, including a 500-seater presentation pavilion for academic and author talks, featuring author and TV presenter Sir Tony Robinson, as well as a concert by the 40-piece TFO Community Orchestra.

There is also a second demonstration arena, showcasing siege warfare attacking an 18ft model of Kenilworth Castle, the seat of Simon de Montfort in the mid-1200s.

As reported recently by the Observer, a separate miniature wargaming convention will take place at Wallace House Community Centre, Oat Street, on Saturday and Sunday.

The main festival ground is on Crown Meadow and also features an artisan craft fayre with 150 traders and community stands.

Organiser Mick Hurst has previously told the Observer that a key aim of the festival is to help transform Evesham into a world-class historic destination.

“This town has so many layers of history and heritage that we do not make enough of – not only a significant battle that changed world politics, but one of the largest and wealthiest abbeys in England, developed around a vision of the Virgin Mary.

“By focusing attention on the Battle of Evesham we are drawing people from all four corners of the globe, many who will go on to explore the town’s rich history and make return visits.

“We are really looking forward to welcoming all the visitors from the Vale of Evesham, and further afield.

“It’s going to be an extra special event in which we commemorate 760 years since the actual battle in 1265, a pivotal moment in the formation of democracy in England and around the world,” he said.

Visitors should note that there is no parking at the festival site this year. A park and ride service will operate from EUFC grounds (WR11 2LZ) at £10 per vehicle.
