Careers help may be just the job

Evesham Editorial 19th Nov, 2019   0

STUDENTS from The De Montfort School spent the day learning about possible future careers as part of a new scheme by council chiefs to inspire the district’s future workforce.

Year 10 pupils started their day with an overview of Wychavon District Council’s strategy and values before touring the building to learn about each department.

They also heard from different staff members about their various job roles including performance and strategy, elections and engineering.

Wychavon is planning to hold further visits in future and is also encouraging businesses, particularly hospitality, engineering and agricultural companies, to host their own school events.

The scheme is part of efforts to raise awareness amongst school pupils about the different career opportunities on offer that may otherwise be overlooked.

Sue Owens, Wychavon’s skills officer, said: “Giving students an insight into your company can really benefit them when they come to taking their first steps into finding a career.

“In fact, research shows a young person who has four or more encounters with an employer is 86 per cent less likely to be unemployed.”

Anna Gwinnett, the school’s careers advisor, said: “Our pupils had a very productive morning finding out about the work of the council and the career opportunities on offer. “We look forward to continued partnership working with Wychavon, Worcestershire County Council and our school enterprise adviser in the future.”
