Bid for end-of-treatment holiday for 'champion' youngster Monty

THE family friend of ‘champion’ Evesham youngster Monty Troughton, who has bravely battled leukaemia for the past three years, is looking to raise enough cash to give him an ‘end of treatment’ holiday.

Monty’s loved ones were told the devastating news he had been diagnosed with leukaemia back in 2020 aged just two years old.

The ‘happy, energetic’ youngster had gone to Worcestershire Royal Children’s ward for some blood tests after a broken leg and several infections that he couldn’t seem to shake.

Monty was swiftly transferred to Birmingham Children’s Hospital to start chemotherapy, which was expected to be required for three-and-a-half years.

He is currently due to finish the treatment in January 2024 and to celebrate, Beth Paul, whose child Ezzy is best friends with Monty, is raising money to give him and his family a much-needed break.

Monty was struggling with repeated needles, but by luck, a local charity, The Grace Kelly Childhood Cancer Trust sent the family a hamper of items to help.

Among the items was a buzzy, a small, vibrating device that helps ease the pain of any procedure requiring a needle stick.

After seeing the ‘unbelievable’ effects of the buzzy, which helped Monty stay comfortable through his next procedure, his mum Athen decided to raise cash to supply Monty’s care wards with enough of the devices to ensure all children could be offered them.

Her efforts saw her raise over £5,700.

Beth said: “They all deserve a holiday so much, after what’s been a heartbreaking and overwhelming three years.

“This holiday would be really well deserved, Monty is so brave and his mum is an amazing and selfless person who when her son first had leukaemia raised money not for herself, but for other children on wards.

“Of course, they’d never ask for help with money for something like this, but I know most of the people around them have wanted to find a way to help and support them, but not always sure how.

“We want to give our champion Monty the best end-of-treatment celebrations ever.”
