Your chance to have fun and get fit

THE ‘Couch to 5k’ – a free running programme that has already started to transform people’s lives in other parts of Worcestershire – is now heading to Evesham.

The free, nine-week course has already helped 80 participants improve their fitness, get active and build their confidence by taking on an organised run, with many having turned from couch potatoes to running enthusiasts.

The scheme will start on August 20 in Evesham and adults aged 18 and over are being encouraged to get involved.

Dev Naraine, who successfully completed the programme in Pershore, said: “If you had told me nine weeks ago that I would run five kilometres, I would have laughed, but I’m so glad that I’ve done it.

“The health benefits are immense for such a short programme. Quite simply, I feel the best I have for many years – both in my head and body – and that’s good for the people around me including in my professional life.

“What originally seemed impossibly daunting, the group achieved by week eight and the 5K Park Run on week nine was totally great.”

Organised by The Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire, in partnership with Wychavon District Council, the initiative is a free nine-week running plan for people who want to be more active.

Stephen Brewster, director of the partnership, said: “If you’ve never run before or want to get back into being more active, then this is a free and easy way to get fitter and healthier.

“Running has so many benefits. Not only does it improve your physical health, it also is good for your heart and lungs.

“It can also help with weight loss and, importantly, help boost confidence and self-belief as well as acting as a great stress-reliever.

“These programmes are perfect if you are new to running. The plan is all about starting slowly and building up gradually.

“Anyone can join in – you don’t need to be Paula Radcliffe.”

The new course will take place on Corporation Field, meeting outside Evesham Leisure Centre (Abbey Road, Evesham, WR11 4SU) every Thursday from 7pm to 8pm, starting on Thursday, August 20 up until Thursday, October 15.
