Young lifesavers enjoy plenty of success

ON THE back of a successful Surf Life Saving Association of Wales Stillwater Lifeguard Championships, South Worcestershire Lifeguard Club members have once again medalled at the Royal Life Saving Society Lifesaving championships in Sheffield.

The 12 to 14-year boys’ team made up of Tom Clifford, Luke Betteridge, Jacob Hesketh and Cameron Leach produced out a brilliant team effort to narrowly miss a medal in the 100m manikin carry relay but did grab silver in the 10m rope throw relay.

The four boys, along with Lara Harding in the girls’ 12 to 14-year group, achieved a raft of personal bests, cheered on by an army of family who travelled long distances to watch.

Amy Weston, in her first year in the 15 to 17-year age group, produced a sterling effort as she narrowly missed a medal in the 50m manikin carry and 100m rescue medley.

She then went on to produce her best in the 100m obstacle race, fighting right to the end to win a bronze medal and beat her personal best by more than five seconds.

Helena Leach, Jack Betteridge and Alex Jackson, the other members of the 15 to 17-year age group, produced some fabulous personal best times as they picked up a full manikin from a pool three metres deep.

Alex achieved three top ten finishes in his first year in this age category.

The youngsters are now looking forward to the the Surf Life Saving Great Britain Stillwater Championships at Millfield School in Somerset in April.
