Workies spring a surprise to clinch Knockout Cup glory

Evesham Editorial 3rd May, 2017   0

DIVISION Three outfit Evesham WMC lifted the Evesham Mechanical Services Knockout Cup after defeating Division Two leaders New Inn Pershore on penalties.

After the sides had drawn 2-2 in a feisty affair, in which three players were sent off, the Workies prevailed 3-1 on penalties.

In a poor first half the Workies took the lead through White, only for Rushton to level within five minutes. An Elliot Grady penalty eight minutes from time looked to have earned the Workies the win but Ballard levelled in stoppage time, which was no more than New Inn deserved.

However, it was left to Workies goalkeeper Sam Ford to be the hero, saving three spot-kicks in the shoot-out.

Elsewhere in the Birdseye Sports Evesham Sunday League, Offenham Rovers set up a Division Two title decider with New Inn Pershore by defeating hosts Alderton 4-0 through goals from Burrows, Sibanda, Brain and Cresswell.

Harvington sealed a third placed finish with a 4-1 victory at Bredon in which Philpott (2), Ferguson and Harper scored the goals, whilst Goodwin netted for Bredon.

Ed Major bagged a brace for Sun Inn and Parry was also on target in their 3-2 home win over Cropthorne, for whom Taylor and Clayton struck.

Division Three champions Broadway United Reserves came from behind to win 2-1 at Stratford United. Waldron gave Stratford the lead before Sallis and Clark struck for Broadway.

Runners-up Bretforton Old Boys Reserves went goal crazy against Avon Titans as they hit 15 without reply. Ben Greenwood netted seven, whilst Griffiths (2), Shepherd (2) and Brain were also among the goals.

Stour Excelsior Reserves closed their campaign with a 2-0 home win over Pebworth through goals from Murphy and Payne.
