Wood claims Handicap wins

Evesham Editorial 11th May, 2017   0

SEVEN boats took to the water at Arden Sailing Club in Defford for the second in the 2017 Handicap Series of races.

In late spring sunshine, the first three boats finished within two minutes of each other, with Simon Newman showing his new Streaker could live up to its name.

He made the most of several stronger puffs of a generally light breeze and showed splendid acceleration.

Newman finished first on the water, but on corrected handicap Tricia Wood (Comet) pushed him into second place by ten seconds. Ralph Evans (Solo) took third place.

The breeze held up remarkably well for the second race but Newman set his sails poorly, failing to notice he had picked up weed on his rudder and was left trailing by Evans and Wood.

The Solo of Evans took and kept the lead on the water, but by an insufficient margin to stop Wood from taking another first place on handicap by about 30 corrected seconds.

Other members were on the water enjoying the sunshine and the light breeze to brush up their sailing skills.

There is an open invitation to the club’s free ‘Push The Boat Out’ evening on Wednesday, May 17 between 5-8pm. This taster event is open to all ages and abilities from beginners to anyone wanting to revisit the joys of dinghy sailing.
