Webb becomes Broadway's new club champion

BOBBY WEBB produced a superb performance to become Broadway’s club champion with a four-shot winning margin.

The 36-hole Men’s Club Championships is one of the key events in the club year and featured more than 50 competitors.

Postponed the previous week due to torrential rain storms, this day could not have been more different with temperatures soaring to record heights.

With plenty of run on the ball and greens which had been prepared beautifully, competitors were provided with every opportunity to score well.

Things were nail-bitingly tight after the first 18 holes and so after a brief lunch all were keen to get out in pursuit of the highly sought-after ‘Champions’ title for 2018.

Webb continued his superb form from round one and went on to score a remarkable 143 gross to earn the esteemed Championship Salver. Will Icke was the runner-up with an excellent 147 gross.

Nett leader on the day was Mark Magee, who earned a well-deserved 136 to claim the Peter Ward Putter, donated in 1988 by former Captain Peter’s widow Julia in his memory.

Angela Sollis and Debbie Donoghue took top places as 43 of Broadway’s ladies competed for the Kathleen Stockdale Trophy.

Donated in memory of the 1957 Ladies Captain, Kathleen’s husband presented the trophy to the Ladies Section in 1971.

After a couple of days of showers, everything had freshened up and as the sun began to make a welcome appearance once again, conditions were very pleasant for play.

In the Silver Division, Donoghue brought in 32 points to seal the win ahead of Sonia Ward, who took second place with 31. Jenny Brindley was third with 30.

Sollis was the star of Bronze Division as she stormed to the top with a magnificent 38 points making her the ultimate trophy winner. Camilla Haines took an impressive second place with 37 points, with Irene Hawkes third with 34.

At the weekend Judith Noyce found sterling form, taking top placing in the Ladies Stableford with a magnificent 39 points ahead of Vicky Watkins, who was a worthy second with 36

Completing an exceptionally busy week of golf at Broadway, the juniors battled to win the George Sloggett Trophy.

Donated in 2006 by a stalwart member of the club and one time junior organiser, George had thought that younger members should get an early taste of the fourball betterball format, common in adult golf.

On this occasion Jackson Wojahn-Parker and Ambrose Eaves shone through, bringing in a tremendous winning score of 40 points to clinch the trophy.
