Weather turns as Broadway ladies do battle

Evesham Editorial 18th Jul, 2017   0

BROADWAY Golf Club’s ladies were in determined mood when they stepped out to compete in their England Golf Medal and Muriel Button Veterans Salver.

The day began on a fine note but the rain that had threatened all morning made an unwelcome appearance as the last ladies were coming in.

Unperturbed by the weather, Frances Friend topped the Silver Division with an excellent 75 nett, followed by Molly King-Smith in second with 78 and Pat Beaman third on countback.

Louise Folkes took the Bronze Division by storm, bringing in a magnificent 64 nett to both seal the win and qualify for the prestigious salver, presented in 1973 by past lady member Muriel Button.

Earning a worthy second place with 74 nett was Valerie Steven, ahead of Fran Andrews in third with 76.

Later that week, with the weather more settled, Broadway’s past lady captains arrived for their annual contest for the Chapman Jug.

Pam Hooper, captain in 2000, had received the job of organising the event as last year’s winner and also demonstrated her impressive golfing abilities on the day as she won with an impressive 32 points.

The 2006 ladies’ captain Jen Doran clinched a close second place by matching Hooper’s score but was edged out on countback.

Sonia Ward, who captained the ladies in 2013, finished third with 30.
