Turner makes a flying start to campaign

EVESHAM’S Olly Turner won both races and secured the driver of the meeting award in a fine start to his third season with Northampton’s Jam Sport Racing team in the British Racing and Sports Car Club Fiesta Junior Championship.

With new sponsor Samco Sport and livery to match, Turner spent the winter preparing for a tough year by training at Evesham Leisure Centre, where he is a Gifted and Talented member.

“Going into the first round I was full of hope, knowing I was ready and the team had prepared the best car for me,” said Turner.

“I wanted a win and knew I had to beat last year’s champion to did it. Also, I had not raced at Silverstone National circuit since my bad crash in 2017, when my car was written off, so we all had some demons to lay to rest.”

Autoenginuity-backed Turner qualified second and front row and knew from practice and qualifying he was capable of consistently producing fast lap times.

After a good start and three-car bunch into Copse, by Maggots Turner had moved into second and from there began to reel in the leader. By halfway through the 15-minute race, Turner was 0.3 seconds away, clearly at one with the car.

By the last couple of laps, the Prince Henry’s High school pupil manoeuvred alongside into paddock straight and took the lead. For the first time in his circuit racing career, Turner and the goodsign.co.uk car finished first and with the fastest lap.

Starting race two on pole, Turner rocketed out to retain the advantage – the race playing out the reverse of race one – as he knew now he was being hunted down.

The driver behind did close in and by the closing laps by Maggots corner Turner was pushed sideways and the challenger nudged ahead into Brooklands.

However, Turner was not having any of that. He got the undercut and for the last corner regained the lead to emerge victorious for the second time.

Turner’s next outing is in South Wales on Sunday at Pembrey.
