AN UNWELCOME cold north-westerly wind and early morning frost greeted the 124 enthusiastic entrants to The Vale Golf Club Seniors Pairs Open.

Despite nature inflicting occasional hail and rain showers, the players, including 77 members of clubs in surrounding counties, were rewarded with some excellent golf followed by a satisfying meal and a warm clubhouse.

The winners of the competition with a commendable score of 46 points were Vale seniors John Turner and Martin Holland.

In second place with 45 points were Terry Rawnsley and Tony Jones from Kenilworth and in third place with 44 points were Neil Tothill and Neil Lowrie from Minchinhampton and Chipping Sodbury respectively.

An outstanding day was enjoyed by all participants on a course in splendid condition and more than £400 was raised in the raffle draw for the senior captain’s charity, The Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Previously, 88 Vale seniors played a Stableford qualifying competition in a cold wind with occasional brief light showers.

Again, some skilful golf was played, resulting in the winner of Division One, Nick Yates, coming home with the commendable score of 42 points.

Second, on countback, was Nic Fieldon, followed by Mike Roberts, both with 39 points.

Division Two results: David Wareing 43, Malcolm Armson 39, Steve Donovan 38, John Nutman 38.

Division Three results: Brian Leggott 43, Martin Holland 38, Andy Jinks 38, Graham Whitehead 38.
