Trophy contest serves up thrills and spills

FORTY-EIGHT pairs competed in a hotly-contested Joe Steward Trophy at Broadway Golf Club.

First presented in 1993 by Joe’s wife in his memory, this better ball event for men’s teams is always popular.

With slick greens and fairways running smoothly, the course provided some excellent opportunities for scoring.

Winners with 43 points were Kenny Campbell and Guy Madgwick.

Mick Sandalls and Duncan Spittle were runners-up with 41, ahead of Robbie Powell and Leon Ballard who clinched third with 40 points.

Also scoring 40 but edged into fourth on countback were John Richmond and Steve Webb.

Later in the week, the ladies competed in their England Golf Medal and Scratch Salver competitions, which were contested by 32 members.

There was a cool breeze but otherwise conditions were fabulous. The recently ironed greens were lightning fast which made scoring tough but ladies enjoyed the challenge and battled on regardless.

The Scratch Salvers were first presented in 1966 and were awarded for the best gross score in each of the Silver and Bronze divisions.

In the Silver Division Jenny Brotherton won the trophy with a tremendous 92 gross on the day, with Pauline O’Hagan runner-up with 93 gross.

Bronze Division’s Salver winner was Maggie McDivitt with an impressive 99 gross, ahead of second placed Judith Noyce with 103.

Brotherton also won top Medal position in Silver Division on the day with 72 nett, leaving Pat Righton second with 77.

In Bronze Division McDivitt took first place with 78 nett ahead of second placed Alison Hewitt with 80.

The week ended with Vicky Watkins winning the ladies’ Saturday England Golf Medal with a first class 73 nett.

Also at the weekend, Broadway’s youngsters stepped out with their usual eagerness to take on the course in their Junior Stableford.

Max Carter once again made things look easy as he prevailed with 48 points, ahead of second placed Keiran Nelhams on countback.

Scott Davis and William Jones both scored 44 to finish third and fourth respectively, leaving Jackson Wojahn-Parker a close fifth with 43.

Ryan Wright was in fine form in the 9-hole Junior Stableford as he accumulated a massive 24 points to take top spot.
