Town's winning run ends at seven

PERSHORE Town’s superb run of form was brought to a halt on Easter Monday as promotion-chasing Bromsgrove Sporting secured a 3-0 victory at the Winstanley King George V Stadium.

Town had gone into the match on the back of a seven-match winning streak in Midland Football League Division One following Saturday’s 3-2 home win over Cadbury Athletic, prior to which the hosts had received the MFL’s Team of the Month award for March.

However, Sporting claimed an impressive win in Monday’s match as they struck three times in a 20-minute spell in the second half.

A large crowd enjoyed a good first half which was evenly balanced as both keepers made two good saves to keep the score level.

Sporting took the lead through a Steve Webb own goal, quickly followed by goals from Aaron Williams and Lewis Clarke which keep the visitors on the heels of leaders Highgate United in the promotion race.

Tenth placed Town, who visit Littleton in a local derby on Saturday, had claimed an entertaining victory 48 hours earlier.

Both teams played good football and the visitors scored in the 18th minute to take the lead when striker Ben Mooney got in behind the home defence to score past Andrew Yarnold.

Pershore equalised five minutes later when Jake Donnelly rose at the back post to head in from close range following good work from Danny Lennon.

It was 1-1 at half time but the match was decided within four minutes of the second half starting as Lennon cut inside and his goalbound shot was deflected in off a defender before two minutes later Dave Williams rose well in the box to head home a Donnelly corner.

The visitors reduced the deficit with ten minutes remaining through substitute Sam Griffin but Town deservedly held on for victory.
