Town stun high-flying Atherstone

PERSHORE Town ended a five-match run without a victory with a crucial 2-0 win over high-flying Atherstone Town on Saturday.

Quentin Townsend’s side produced a superb display to see off the visitors, who began the day in second place.

Despite the three points Pershore remain second bottom in Midland League Division One, but just four points separate 14th to 19th place.

The hosts dominated the first half and took the lead when Jamie Clarke, who had been fouled in the box, took and scored the resultant penalty.

Pershore had further good efforts through Dane Aldington, Steve Roach and Richard Thomas-Robinson before Clarke grabbed his second goal.

Linking well with fellow lively striker Reece Jacobs, Clarke received the ball just inside the box and coolly placed his right-footed shot into the corner of the goal.

Atherstone improved in the second half but, when called upon, Pershore keeper Shaun Edwards made a couple of decent saves.

Clarke had a great opportunity to put the outcome beyond doubt when put through with a one-on-one, but his dinked effort over the advancing keeper was just saved.

Despite late pressure from Atherstone, Town’s back four of Steve Webb, captain Shaun Griffiths, James Walker and Thomas-Robinson defended superbly to record a second consecutive clean sheet.

Tonight (Tuesday) Town face a massive six-pointer as they host Chelmsley Town. They then visit Racing Club Warwick on Saturday.
