Midland League Division One

PERSHORE Town ended a six-match losing streak with a vital victory on Saturday which moved them five points above the drop zone.

This was a spirited and well deserved win for Quentin Townsend’s men which should have been by a bigger margin.

Having fallen behind early in the match, Town equalised after 30 minutes when Will Stallard’s ball to the far post was headed back by Luke Church for Ben Lane to finish from close range on the volley.

Town took the lead just before half time when debutant Reece Jacobs created space and fired into the far corner.

Pershore dominated proceedings in the second half and could have extended their lead through chances which fell to Jacobs and Church.

However, the hosts equalised after 70 minutes from a deflected free kick.

Jacobs scored his second only two minutes later when he headed in from a corner before Church finished a good flowing move to make it 4-2 after 78 minutes.

The game ended in controversy after a dubious penalty was awarded to Nuneaton and scored in the 90th minute, resulting in Town player-manager Townsend receiving a red card.

Town entertain Pelsall Villa in a vital encounter on Saturday (3pm).
