Town rise in league but exit cup

Evesham Editorial 10th Nov, 2016 Updated: 10th Nov, 2016   0

IT HAS been a mixed few days for Pershore Town who followed Saturday’s 4-1 Midland League Division One victory at Pelsall Villa with a 2-0 Smedley Crooke Memorial Cup last 16 exit at Barnt Green Spartak on Wednesday.

Quentin Townsend’s side moved up to 11th in the table after cruising to victory at Pelsall.

Dane Aldington had already hit the post for Town before Steve Webb put Sean Cooke through to finish with a quality right-footed half-volley after 32 minutes.

Aldington scored four minutes later when he converted a rebound off the bar from another Cooke effort.

Town should have had the game wrapped up by half time having missed several good chances before the break.

However, despite the hosts’ attempts to get back into the game early in the second half, it was Cooke who increased Town’s lead after 62 minutes when, having beaten his full back, his cross deflected off a defender into the net.

Town were dominating proceedings and it was no surprise when the lead was increased through substitute Jelson Antonio who finished confidently from Will Gayton’s squared ball across the box.

Pelsall scored a late consolation through Ryan Wilkins but the outcome was never in doubt.

A Town side missing several players due to work commitments, including both of their recognised goalkeepers, conceded twice in the last ten minutes at Barnt Green Spartak to miss an opportunity to progress into the quarter-finals.

Town missed early chances and late in the game Gayton hit the post from a free kick, whilst substitute Antonio was denied by a good save by Spartak’s keeper.

However, a brace from substitute Stefan Gordon sealed the hosts’ progress.

Pershore are without a game on Saturday as scheduled visitors Uttoxeter Town are involved in the FA Vase.
