Town are sunk at the death

Pershore Town 1 AFC Hinckley 2

Midland Football League Division One

A VERY entertaining match at the Winstanley King George V Stadium on Saturday resulted in the high-flying visitors scoring in the fourth minute of stoppage time to seal victory.

The visitors’ team included ex-Worcester City striker Marco Adaggio and former Wolves and Cheltenham Town midfielder JJ Melligan, both of whom had penalties saved by Town’s Andrew Yarnold in a crazy three-minute spell just before half time.

Town’s defence and keeper have been strong points this season, with one of the league’s better defensive records despite the club’s lowly position.

Things may be changing, however, at the other end of the pitch where a lack of goals has been a problem.

Pershore’s new signing from Bromsgrove Sporting – former Evesham United attacker Danny Lennon – proved a handful to the visitors and was unlucky not to score with several good efforts.

Town took the lead in the 61st minute when Lennon’s shot was blocked just inside the area and Joe Walsh finished with the rebound from 15 yards, placing his shot into the corner.

Walsh was unlucky, however, as it was his deflection in the 76th minute from Hinckley’s free kick from the edge of the area which diverted the ball into the corner of the net for the equaliser.

Just prior to that goal, following another good save by Yarnold, Town had an excellent chance to increase their lead when on the break Lennon fed Steve Roche who just before finishing was denied by an excellent last-ditch tackle on the edge of the box.

Four minutes into injury time, however, Hinckley scored with a header from a corner to send the large and vocal away support into wild celebrations.

Town travel to another high-flying club, Uttoxeter Town, on Saturday.
