INVITATION Day has always been one of the more popular events on Evesham Golf Club seniors’ calendar and last Wednesday was no exception as 48 players – a larger field than usual – gathered at Craycombe Links.
Evesham’s course has been in wonderful condition all year, which may have contributed to the notably high standard of golf as no less than seven pairs finished with 40+ Stableford points.
The first three couples – all on 42 points – were separated by countback with Dave Kewley (EGC) and Phil Hall (Tewkesbury Park) finishing the strongest to lift the trophy.
Ian Tait (EGC) and John Eastoe (The Vale) were runners-up and Neil Croft (EGC) and Mike Hird (The Vale) finished third.
Mike Abraham (EGC) was nearest the pin on the 9th and Geoff Smith (Puckrup Hall) finished even closer for the visitors’ prize.
Also of note were four birdie 2s – all from visitors – proving, if nothing else, that Evesham seniors invite good golfers as guests.
Finally, a mention in despatches for Harry Shute from Ham Manor near Worthing who travelled the furthest to take part, although other guests from Taunton, Leeds and Romsey in Hampshire were hardly local.
