Thomas extends Sixways stay

EXPERIENCED loosehead prop Marc Thomas has extended his stay at Sixways by signing a one-year contract extension.

The 30-year-old Welshman joined the club in November after playing for Harlequins in the second half of last season and has made seven appearances – including three starts – this season.

Thomas played his first professional rugby for Ospreys, where Warriors Head Coach Jonathan Thomas was a team-mate, and he has since played for Cardiff Blues as well as Jersey Reds, Yorkshire Carnegie and Doncaster Knights in the Championship.

“Marc is someone that I actually played with at Ospreys around ten years ago,” said Jonathan Thomas.

“What I really admire about Marc is that he has done it the hard way. He was part of the Ospreys set-up and it’s easy for players to fall off the cliff when they are let go.

“But he has such a desire – especially for scrummaging – and he went around the Championship clubs and made a really good for himself and fought his way back.

“The biggest thing you need in this league, especially in the front row, is depth. Marc has a superb attitude and a mindset to work hard.

“He’s a doer and he’s provided good depth for us. He’s done so well that he has forced a few starts so we are really pleased to have Marc with us.”

Until Harlequins gave Thomas his first taste of Premiership rugby last year, the prop thought that his career as a professional rugby player was over and he had started a labouring job with a welding firm in West Yorkshire.

“I am really enjoying my time here and I am looking forward to extending my stay,” Marc Thomas.

“A year ago I didn’t really expect to be playing pro rugby again. But I got the opportunity to go to Quins and then here through JT.

“I am enjoying my rugby again, we have a good group of boys here. I feel refreshed, I’ve been getting some good game time and I am learning loads from the top coaches we have here.”

Thomas, who started playing rugby at his hometown club in Builth Wells and spent time with Otago in New Zealand before joining Bridgend Ravens in the Welsh Premiership.

“Marc has established himself here at Sixways and it is great to see him extend his stay with us.” Said Warriors Director of Rugby Alan Solomons.

“Marc is as tough as teak and has shown that he is a Premiership quality loosehead who is comfortable at this level. We look forward to continuing working with him.”
