Testing conditions to start the new year

A BITTER wind blew as Broadway Golf Club’s ladies ventured out for their first competition of the new year.

The Stableford was contested over nine holes and the combination of sub-zero temperatures and temporary winter greens made scoring a challenge.

Conditions clearly suited Division One’s Pat Righton, as was demonstrated by her winning score of 18 points.

Chris Saunders achieved a worthy second place with 16 points, ahead of Liz Smith who took third on countback.

Louise Folkes topped Division Two with 19 points, ahead of Irene Hawkes in second with 17 and Jude Vidler who was third with 16.

At the weekend the men were out in force to compete in the fifth round of their Winter League.

Keen to get out after the Christmas recess, all were eagerly awaiting the klaxon to sound after a delayed start due to low cloud.

Once play was underway in the Greensomes match, there was some excellent golf to be witnessed and, with the course playing superbly, the points were there in abundance.

Duncan Spittle and Russell Payne secured first place with 45 points, which was matched by Joe Icke and Peter Cockle who had to settle for second place on countback despite their impressive score.

James Waterhouse and Chris Hands eased into a commendable third place with 44 points, leaving Tom Roberts and Noel Hughes to take fourth with 43.

Following the Winter League action, Broadway’s new captains celebrated their inauguration with their annual captain’s drive-in.

Club captain Jim Hutchison, ladies’ captain Brenda Corfield, seniors’ captain Chris Hunt and juniors’ captain Joe Golding were all determined to begin their 2017 year as captain with magnificent drives in front of the gathered crowd.

Brenda was first to send her drive straight down the middle, followed by Joe who, with youth and agility on his side, sent his colossal drive off towards the 300-yard marker.

Chris was next with a tremendous shot into the distance before Jim brought up the rear with a superb display of controlled driving, coolly dispatching the ball down the middle.

Members and their families were out in droves to support the event, which was followed by a superb carvery provided as always by the fantastic Fayreways catering team.
