PERSHORE Tennis Centre held their annual Club Championships Tournament finals as the competition reached its conclusion having run throughout the summer.

And the men’s singles tournament was won by Alfie Mills who, at 15-years-old, is believed to be the youngest ever winner of the event since its inception.

He battled past four opponents to reach the final and faced 14-year-old Christian Vatahov for the title as he went on to win 6-3, 7-6 in a high quality match.

And youth was also on show in the ladies singles final as Emma Bowen saw off the challenge of 15-year-old Ruth Teale.

Simon Corbishley, Coach and Championships Event Manager at Pershore Tennis Centre, said: “This year 148 entries were received over 18 events.

“Some 71 years separated the youngest player (six-years-old) and the oldest (77-years-old) just going to show what an inclusive sport the game is.

“With 210 matches played, the courts have been seeing plenty of action!”

Ruth also competed in the ladies doubles final with partner Caoimhe Guppy against defending champions Emma Bowen and Sarah McCormick.

And despite Ruth and Caoimhe winning a set, Emma and Sarah successfully defended their title in a superb showpiece.

In the men’s doubled final Christian and Alfie faced off once again in a spectacular match that lasted more than two hours.

And Chirsitan would gain his revenge with a thrilling 7-6, 4-6, 10-8 win alongside partner Simon Corbishley with the former believed to be the youngest ever winner of the doubles title.

Elsewhere, in the mixed doubles final, Jack Austin and S McCormick beat Guy Ramus and Lucy Taylor Radmore in another hard fought affair.

And Peter Corbishley and Sandra Foulkes impressed to win the over-60’s mixed final as they overcame Chris Lowe and Ginny Lowe 7-5, 6-4.

There was also success for Jon Coldridge who beat Pete Ford to claim the over-45 men’s singles title and Claire Ralph who beat Sandra Edwards to claim the over-45 ladies singles title.

And in the over-45 doubles events, Jon Coldridge and S Corbishley beat Andrew Smith and Steve Cole in the men’s competition with E Bowen and S McCormick ousting C Ralph and Beverly Morris to claim the ladies title.

In the over-60’s singles final, Paul Massey beat Andrew Smith whilst the over-60 doubles finals have both been dealyed.

Over the same weekend, the club’s junior players competed to be crowned club champion in under-eight, under-12, under-14 and under-18 categories.

It was a family affair in the under-12 final as Aayush Nilak beat younger brother Eshaan in a highly entertaining match.

The under-14 boy’s final was a similarly riveting affair as Theo Houston clinched the first set in a tie break on his way to beating Tom Porter who defeated number one seed Jack Bulbulia earlier in the competition.

Another close match in the under-14 girls final saw Maegan Teale come from a set down to beat Carys Macleod 1-4, 4-2, 10-8.

There were also wins for Alfie Mills who beat Ben Stanley to claim the under-18 men’s singles whilst Ruth Teale beat C Macleod to claim the under-18 ladies singles title and Evelina Skridla beat Buddy Stanbury in the under-eight’s singles final.
