SIXTEEN Broadway Golf Club ladies’ pairs competed in the club’s qualifying round of the England Golf Australian Spoons competition.
The foursomes stableford began on a cool note, but it stayed dry throughout, providing ladies with excellent conditions for play.
Taking full advantage of those conditions were winning pair Valerie Steven and Pat Righton who totalled an impressive 39 points.
Liz Smith and Jayne Rose achieved second place with 35 points and sharing the score were Frances Friend and Camilla Haines who were third on countback. Ladies’ captain Irene Hawkes and partner Debbie Donoghue earned a worthy fourth place with 34 points.
Winning duo Steven and Righton now go forward to represent Broadway at the England Golf Area Finals at Launceston Golf Club in Cornwall in July.
At the weekend, a packed men’s field turned out to support the Harvey Cup, kindly donated in 1964 by former member Fred Harvey.
Harvey was always an enthusiastic supporter of the more senior members of the club and donated the trophy specifically for the over 55s.
With a glorious morning of sunshine in store and the course in peak condition, players had every opportunity to earn those valuable points.
Mike Humpston was delighted to claim the prestigious trophy with 41 points, ahead of second and third-placed Warren McDivitt and John Richards respectively on 40. Jake Norman was fourth with 39.
