Star driver Turner makes the podium

EVESHAM speedster Olly Turner claimed the driver of the meeting award for the second successive time as he finished on the podium at rounds nine and ten of the BRSCC Fiesta Junior Championship at Snetterton.

A positive Friday test day showed much promise and scope for the weekend’s action as he clocked a personal best of 2.20.2.

However, Saturday morning did not start so well as Turner was off the pace with an issue with the car which the team quickly sorted for practice two.

They got the Amber Motorhomes-backed car on track with the issue appearing to have been sorted, but a fellow racer came off the track early in the practice, ending hopes of securing any laps before the important qualifying later that afternoon.

Under the guidance of Jam Sport and Ryan Hooker, Turner consolidated the past four rounds and set off with a great deal of experience under his belt for the 20-minute qualifying on new tyres.

Lap after lap he was consistently putting in 2.20 times and, although a little frustrated the times had not put him further up the starting grid, it was still a personal best qualifying position.

Rain threatened all of Sunday’s race day, but race one started in the dry. A disappointing start on the hill of the Snetterton circuit put him down to ninth on the first lap, losing two positions.

Undeterred, Turner, in the #22 Power Maxed-supported ST 150, had some fabulous battles with fellow racers as all showed their skill and racecraft, with the Vale driver seventh overall.

Race two was all to play for as a fast and accurate start saw him rectify race one’s starting error and move from seventh to fifth in wet conditions.

The front-runners were very close for the first quarter before the leading two got away, but Turner was on the hunt, working his way through the field until it was clear he was in contention for third place and a podium finish.

With only two laps to go, Turner passed and moved into third for a short moment but was soon overtaken again. However, he was not to be denied and eventually grabbed third place in a thrilling last turn for the line.

The championship resumes in August at Silverstone.
