TEN middle school pupils excelled at a Vale tag rugby tournament in which they enjoyed its special spirit of friendship and sport for all.

The one-day South Worcestershire Tag Rugby competition for year five and six boys and girls – part of the national Sainsbury’s School Games programme – was held at Pershore Rugby club for 11 teams from nine local schools and the team from St Nicholas CE Middle School won all of their four matches to lift the winners’ cup for schools with more than 100 pupils.

The event was organised by School Games organiser Sam Hook, of De Montfort School in Evesham, with help from PRFC’s minis and juniors section and ten young volunteer sports leaders from St Egwin’s CE Middle School, who officiated at the event.

Jim Kehoe, deputy headteacher at St Nicholas CE Middle School, said: “The most impressive part of the day was not the high standard of rugby played, nor indeed the final result, although we were very pleased to win our section of course, but it was the children’s remarkable good spirit and sportsmanship across all of their games.

“Their generous approach was noted by others taking part, which made me especially proud.”
