BILL SOLLIS recorded a tremendous 44 points to defeat a packed men’s field and win the Harvey Cup at Broadway GC.

The cup was kindly donated in 1964 by former member Fred Harvey, who was always an enthusiastic supporter of the more senior members of the club and donated the trophy specifically for the over-55s.

With a glorious morning of sunshine in store and the course in peak condition players had every opportunity to earn valuable points.

Sollis was delighted to claim the prestigious trophy on countback from Dave Morris, who also scored 44 points.

Paul Emsley was third with 42 points and Geoff Doran was fourth with 40.

n A full field of Broadways’ ladies participated over two days in their club round of the County Kitcat Qualifier.

With the weather continuing to be kind and the course playing superbly, conditions were near perfect.

In the Silver Division, Jenny Brindley stormed to the top with a remarkable 39 points, ahead of Jayne Rose in second with a superb 37 and Lin Andrew third with 32.

In the Bronze Division, Camilla Haines scored 34 points with Chris Parkinson chasing her lead with 33. Esther Pettitt earned a deserved third place with 33 on countback.

Women with the best six scores will now compete for the Kitcat Cup on 21 September at Filton Golf Club.

n Harry Hawthorne showed incredible form on the day to collect the Stanley Bowl competition with a tremendous 42 points.

The trophy was donated by Mrs L Stanley who had been a member at Broadway before the Second World War and had then given the award in 1964 in memory of her son.

After torrential rain during the night, the course held up well and continued to provide first rate conditions for the 90-strong field.

Hawthorne finished first with a tremendous 42 points, two ahead of Bobby Webb.

Dereck Buttler and Warren McDivitt both scored 39 points, with Buttler edging into third on countback.
