Simpson clinches crucial victory

Evesham Editorial 28th Feb, 2019   0

KANE SIMPSON bagged the only goal of the game to secure a 1-0 victory for Evesham United at mid-table Larkhall Athletic and cement the Robins’ place in the Southern League Division One South play-off positions.

The performance of Paul Collicutt’s side was vastly improved from seven days previous in the disappointing defeat to promotion rivals Winchester City and the Robins could even afford for Simpson to later miss a penalty, leaving the club’s leading scorer on 15 goals since arriving in December.

The game’s decisive moment arrived in just the sixth minute when Simpson headed home at the back post after Steve Davies had flicked on a right-wing cross.

Simpson squandered the chance to double his side’s advantage when he failed to hit the target from the spot after Will Wellon was felled in the box, but the error did not prove costly for the visitors.

Fifth-placed Evesham’s hold on a top five spot is a slender one though as Winchester City won one of their games in hand in midweek to sit just a place and a point behind United having played two fewer matches.

Evesham continue their play-off push with the first of nine remaining matches on Saturday when they visit Somerset outfit Street, who sit four places and six points behind the Robins but with a game in hand.
