EVESHAM Archery Club’s Harriet Fletcher rounded off a fantastic experience competing against the best young archers in the country by winning a silver medal.
Harriet took part in the week-long Archery GB Youth Festival at Lilleshall where the Junior Great Britain squads come together to compete, with the event also open to any junior archer who is interested in competing with GB squad archers.
There was a truly international edge to the festival as archers from Sweden, Ireland and the Netherlands became part of a 160-strong band of young athletes.
Harriet exceeded all her goals for the week, ranking 12th out of 16 youth girls shooting the compound bow, winning her first match in the mixed team and finally winning a silver medal in the team event in the women’s youth compound section.
The festival is run under exactly the same format as the World Championships with every archer shooting a ranking round at the start of the week.
The score achieved in the ranking round gives the ranking for the next stages in which archers compete in head-to-head knockout competition, leading to gold, silver and bronze finals.
The ranking round is also used to generate teams of archers with a mixture of abilities so the teams are pretty much equal. The teams then compete in head-to-head matches as well.
The week was fantastically run by Archery GB and ensured all the athletes who attended had the best possible opportunity to shoot well, have fun and make new friends.
