Second successive promotion for Broadway's men

Liam Moakes 29th Oct, 2018

BROADWAY Golf Club’s men’s team are celebrating after being crowned champions of the North Gloucestershire Foursomes League.

Following their superb 2017 season in Division Three in which they finished champions, the team began the 2018 season in Division Two with high hopes and how right they were to do so.

The squad had developed well and had a great balance of youth and experience, along with a high level of skill, as can be seen from the handicaps of the players being an average of six or below.

The team’s season began with their first two games against the relegated sides from Division One – playing first against Cleeve Cloud away where they were unlucky to lose 3.5-2.5.

This was followed by the first home match against Lilley Brook which was halved but could have been won but for a strong final few holes from one of the opposition pairs.

At this point, the Broadway lads were bottom of the league with one point and with their next match at Gloucester who had not lost at home for five years.

However, Broadway secured an excellent 3.5-2.5 win and, with momentum now firmly on their side, marched on to a 5-1 success at Cotswold Edge.

This was all the more impressive given the fact Broadway were behind at the turn and facing a very tricky back nine.

Broadway then secured a 5.5-0.5 win against visitors Painswick and sights were firmly set on winning the title.

Going from strength to strength, Broadway’s team were becoming invincible and, with their final home matches resulting in further wins, enough points were accumulated to secure the championship.

The team now look forward to testing their skills in Division One in 2019.
