Scramble for Easter honours

Evesham Editorial 24th Apr, 2017   0

A BUSY week at Broadway Golf Club began with mixed teams contesting the Easter Texas Scramble.

The weather was on the cool side and the threat of showers was never very far away but this did not dampen the spirits of those competing as teams of four went out determined to enjoy their game.

With the course playing splendidly, the points were there to be made. The final three positions were tight but there was never any doubt about the winners as Ian and Vicky Watkins along with Pat Righton and Dereck Buttler claimed first place with a tremendous 61 nett.

Mark and Andi Stedman and team-mates Lin and Mike Everitt clinched second place with a superb 64.1, ahead of Bernard and Debbie Donoghue and Ian and Judith Noyce who took a worthy third with 64.2.

THE WEATHER was again fine for the following day’s first ladies’ Medal of the season.

The England Golf Medal was played alongside the Silver Salver Trophy, presented to the club in 1958 by past lady member Madge Roberts.

Unperturbed by the cold, Silver Division’s Chris Saunders did extremely well to bring in an excellent 75 nett to seal first place from Liz Smith who also scored 75 but finished second on countback. Isobella Lates was third with 76 nett.

In Bronze Division, Valerie Steven took top spot with a magnificent 72 nett, leaving Irene Hawkes and Louise Folkes to battle for second and third with 74 nett, with Hawkes achieving a commendable second on countback.

BY THE weekend, the sun was beginning to make a very welcome appearance as the Saturday ladies came out to compete for the same prized Salver.

It was Annabelle Carter who found her form this time, bringing in an impressive 72 nett to earn first place.

Jen Doran was second with 77 nett, leaving Lin Andrew third with 78.

The ladies returning the top 16 scores now qualify for the knockout rounds to compete for the prestigious Salver.

THERE was some further impressive golf played in the midweek Stableford at Broadway as Ken Gould secured first place with an exceptional 43 points in a 67-strong field.

Mike Hunt was second with 42 points, Curtis Major third with 41 and Chris Wright fourth with 40.
