HUNDREDS of competitors took to the River Avon as Evesham Rowing Club’s Autumn Head event returned to the racing calendar.
Racing took place upstream over a 2,000m stretch of the river with the finish line just past Evesham Rowing Club.
The event marked the club’s busiest Autumn Head to date as the fixture returned to the calendar after the cancellation of last year’s Head due to low water levels.
Evesham club captain, Simon North said: “This was our busiest Autumn Head ever.
“The meticulous planning by our event organisers, efficient marshalling of crews, the scrumptious catering and the friendly, supportive atmosphere saw Evesham Rowing Club put on a show that everyone in the town can be proud of.
“I want to share heartfelt thanks with our organising committee and to the many, many volunteers who gave their time and energy to ensure the event’s success.
“Their teamwork, kindness and enthusiasm embody what makes Evesham Rowing Club such a special community and such an inclusive club.”
Evesham’s crews achieved several notable victories with strong performances from junior to masters level against competition from a number of visiting clubs including neighbours Stratford.
And some Evesham crews took to the water for the first time after progressing through the club’s Learn to Row programme.
North added: “The standard of racing was excellent.
“Some of our athletes were racing for the first time, having come through our learn to row programme.
“Run by some of our most experienced and dedicated volunteer coaches, it introduces our wonderful sport to people from all backgrounds, ages and abilities.”
