Qualifier is hotly contested

BROADWAY Golf Club’s ladies were in competitive mood when they contested their County Kitcat Qualifier.

Played over two days, a full field participated and, with the weather continuing to be kind and the course playing superbly, conditions were near perfect.

In the Silver Division, Jayne Potter and Vicky Watkins battled it out for first and second positions with an excellent 35 points and Potter just edged into first place on countback.

Annabelle Carter clinched third place with 34 and Sonia Ward was fourth with 33.

In the Bronze Division, Patricia Trahar stormed into first place with 40 points, ahead of second placed Irene Hawkes with an excellent 38.

Judith Noyce earned a deserved third place with 35 on countback from fourth placed Louise Folkes.

Ladies with the best six scores will now go on to compete for the Kitcat Cup on September 14 at Puckrup Golf Club.

BROADWAY’S valiant seniors scratch team were in form again as they represented the club at the Gloucestershire County Seniors Scratch Foursomes.

This time the three pairs – Mike Everitt and partner Les Seaton, president Richard Rouse and Les Carter and Peter Azizi and Brian Lawrence – all travelled to Forest Hills GC to play in the knockout competition.

The Broadway team did well to bring back a resounding 2-1 win, once again showing their grit and determination against tough opposition and on a course which was challenging for the visitors.

All now look forward to hearing news of the next round draw, due any day now.

AT THE weekend, a packed men’s field turned out to support the Harvey Cup, kindly donated in 1964 by former member Fred Harvey.

Fred was always an enthusiastic supporter of the more senior members of the club and donated the trophy specifically for the over 55s.

With a glorious morning of sunshine in store and the course in peak condition, players had every opportunity to earn those valuable points.

In outstanding form and bringing in a tremendous 41 points was first placed Barry Deeming who was delighted to claim the prestigious trophy.

Dereck Buttler and George Gavin achieved a creditable 41 to take second and third places respectively, leaving Ken Major to seal fourth place with 40.
