BRET LADIES produced a very competitive performance but were beaten in an exciting contest against last season’s runners-up in Saturday’s opening game of the campaign.

The Pink Ladies were desperate to start the season well and put last season’s disappointments behind them but it was the visitors who struck first after weathering a strong start from the hosts.

The home team replied almost immediately when Hannah Dufty drove along the right and flicked the ball towards Julie Hall who controlled the ball waist-high before firing home the equaliser.

However, parity was only shortlived as Old Bristolians’ short, sharp passing split the home team defence twice more to open a 3-1 lead.

Bret showed great team spirit and replied with a well worked short corner routine which saw Danni Cox feed the ball into Alice Cook, who returned possession back to Cox on the post who pushed the ball home to reduce the deficit.

The home team pushed for the equaliser and came close several times from short corners but the visitors held on to take a 3-2 lead into the break.

The second half was as competitive as the first as both teams created some great opportunities.

Dufty and Cook’s pace on both flanks continued to cause problems for the visitors’ defence as the hosts searched for the leveller but, just as Bretforton looked to be getting back into the game, the visitors scored two goals from well worked routines to give themselves breathing space at 5-2.

Bretforton, beaten but not dispirited, pushed forward and came close to reducing their arrears with the last short corner of the match when Cox again found herself with a scoring opportunity, only for the ball to strike the wrong side of the post.

A trip to Stroud awaits Bretforton on Saturday.

THE SCORELINE does not do justice to the efforts of Bret 2nds who played well and showed promise with some well worked moves.

Shipton scored twice from well worked short corners, giving stand-in keeper Ness Dufty little chance.

A fine move along the right wing from Lisa Davis saw her pass into the D for Jessica Hadley to score and reduce the hosts’ arrears.

In the second half Bretforton pressed but could not capitalise on a number of short corners whilst at the other end Shipton took their chances to score three more goals.

However, this was a sterling effort, in particular from Dufty in goal.

With new players coming in, the team shows good potential for the forthcoming season.

Bret visit Stroud 2nds on Saturday.
