EVESHAM Golf Club held its 2014 Mixed Open on Sunday and competitors from 12 different clubs took part.

The winners were Conryn Abbott of Evesham and Simon Williams of Puckrup with 40 points, ahead of second placed Beverley Coleman and Robert Curtis from The Warwickshire with 38 points.

Third were Anastasia Boardman and Simon Webb of The Warwickshire, whilst the Tattersall cups for the best Evesham couple went to Joan and Ken Hunt with 34 points.

Evesham ladies’ captain Enid Walker celebrated her Lady Captain’s Day with an Ascot theme. After drinks on the patio in full Ascot attire, the ladies then played an 18-hole Stableford competition with teams of three and best two scores to count.

The winners were Jean Bevan, Marlene Billings and Valerie Bomford with 70 points, second were Val Lemon, Pat Saville and Margaret Roberts with 65 and third were Julie Winter, Shelagh Crane and Pam Hutcheon with 62. A cream tea followed.

Evesham seniors entertained Kidderminster last Wednesday and lost 5-2 and the trend continued last Friday when they lost 4.5-2.5 at The Worcestershire.

Against Kidderminster Ian Facer and Ian Wood won 5&4 and Dave Hartland and Martin Williams won 6&5.

Against The Worcestershire Neil Croft and Ian Facer won 5&3, Dave Hartland won 2 up and Dave Kewley and Jeff Fletcher halved their match.

Both fixtures provided enjoyable golf and splendid hospitality.

Evesham men played for the Baker Cup on Saturday and Russ Leeming proved a popular winner of the trophy which he retained having won the competition last season.

With the course again looking in tip-top condition, only five players out of a full field came in with scores below nett par, mainly due to the thick rough and some very tricky pin positions.

The morning players coped better than the afternoon for some unknown reason, with the lowest scores coming from the early starters.

Leeming came in with a nett 70 off a handicap of 13, just pipping the ever-improving Gavin Griffiths who plays off ten, on countback.

Griffiths won Division One by one shot, with the consistent Andrew Witts runner-up and Trevor Woodward third.

Runner-up to Leeming in Division Two was John Vaughen with a very creditable 71 off his 16 handicap, with Alan Askew third on countback.

Division One result: 1st Gavin Griffiths (80-10=70); 2nd Andrew Witts (80-9=71); 3rd Trevor Woodward (82-9=73).

Division Two result: 1st Russ Leeming (83-13=70); 2nd John Vaughen (87-16=71); 3rd Alan Askew (86-15=71).
