BROADWAY Golf Club ladies’ charity stableford raised £70 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
The weather was very pleasant and the course played splendidly, allowing for some fine golf to be witnessed.
This was ably demonstrated by Esther Pettitt, who took overall top spot with an impressive 37 points. Elaine Hickin headed up Division One with a deserved 33 points, ahead of Sonia Ward and Julia Fortescue who both scored 31, with Ward edging into second place on countback.
In Division Two Kate Bellamy’s superb 37 points sealed top spot. Ladies’ captain Irene Hawkes earned an impressive second place with 35, sharing the score with Louise Folkes who narrowly finished third on countback.
At the weekend, Broadway’s mixed teams competed for the prestigious Rummer Cup. There was a distinct chill in the air to begin with but there were definite signs summer was on the way as the 20 pairs came out to compete in the foursomes strokeplay competition.
Presented by a visiting Dutch couple in 1969, the Rummer Cup was so called because of its shape – that of a drinking cup as featured in a painting by the renowned Dutch artist Frans Hals.
With greens running beautifully, the course provided some outstanding conditions for play and there were some first-rate scores returned.
Jenny Bruton and Michael Harris won the event with a magnificent 70 nett and runners-up were James and Camilla Russell with 72, ahead of Richard Rouse and partner Elaine Hickin who took third with 73. Pam and Rod Hooper were fourth with 74.5.
