PERSHORE women’s touch rugby squad won all of their matches to take top spot at their home tournament as they continued their defence of their Midlands Ladies Touch League South West title against five other ladies teams.
However, it was a close call whether the tournament would proceed when, on the morning of the event, water started rising on the club’s three pitches which, although immaculately tended and fast to drain, are close to the river which was still rising after the previous week’s heavy rainfall.
The women were undeterred, however, and all the round-robin matches were completed in a show of entertaining rugby as 49 tries were scored.
Pershore’s winning squad were Teresa Crowley (seven tries), Sue Breay (two tries), Sian White, Sharon Moore, Verity Farr (four tries), Emmie Bewley (three tries), Kiele Doyle (three tries and team player of the tournament) and Natalie Bewley (aged 13), for whom it was her first Midlands Ladies Touch League tournament.
Second placed team at the tournament were Ross, followed by Luctonians, Bredon and Berry Hill.
Pershore Ladies coach Alice Keylock said: “The standard of touch in the women’s league is really strong, so we all remain focused and take each match as it comes.
“Last month we had a successful tournament at Luctonians and this second tournament win of the season is an added boost, but there are still four regional South West tournaments to come and three Midlands-wide events, so there is everything to play for.”
Touch rugby training takes place at Pershore RFC every Wednesday at 7.30pm and Sunday at 10.30am. Anyone aged 13 and over can come along and have a go and the first three sessions are free. Contact Fizz on 01905 381080 for details.
