Pershore slip to fourth after first defeat

PERSHORE will be looking to bounce back from losing their unbeaten start to the season – and top spot in the Birmingham League Second Division – when they travel to Penkridge tomorrow (Saturday).

The Plums slipped from first place to fourth after a seven-wickets loss at home to Fordhouses last Saturday.

However, only six points separate the top four, with Wombourne now leading the field on 74, followed by Walmley in second and Sutton Coldfield third.

Pershore, having won the toss and elected to bat, were indebted to skipper Chris Ridings for the bulk of their runs in a tally of 177-9 off 48 overs.

Ridings scored 68 off 107 balls to steady the innings, sharing an 88-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Matthew Brace (37).

Khashif Hussain (3-35) and former Pershore player David Powles (3-41) were the pick of the Fordhouses bowlers.

The visitors, who had gone into the game without a win this season, then knocked off the runs to pass their target after 37 overs, with opener Sanjay Ramaswamy (51) and Steven Sandhu (54 not out from 57 balls) the principal contributors in their 179-3.

Pershore Seconds were skittled for 139 as they went down to a 47-runs defeat at Walsall in 2nd XI Division One.

A dazzling 96 from Jordan Stynes guided Walsall to 186 all out after they won the toss and batted first at Gorway.

Andrew Hill took 5-48 and Martin Johnson 4-28 for Pershore.

The visitors then looked well placed with opener Owen Preston (49) and Andrew Hill (32) in tandem. But once they departed, only Johnson (19) of the bottom six batsmen managed double figures as they were dismissed for 139 in the 44th over.

The Seconds entertain Penkridge tomorrow.
