Past winners are continuing to impress

WITH nominations closing on Friday for this year’s Herefordshire & Worcestershire Sports Awards, we look at back at where those who have been honoured previously are now.

Evie Richards, who won the BBC Newcomer of the Year Award last year, is still continuing to impress on the bike.

The 18-year-old British Cycling Olympic Junior Academy rider, of Malvern, finished on the podium for the third time as she won the silver medal at the Union Cycliste Internationale XCO Junior Series in France.

The 2014 Disabled Sports Person of the Year Lauren Rowles, of Cofton Hackett, has proved what a multi-talented athlete she is. Having transferred from a wheelchair track athlete, she will make her senior Great Britain rowing team debut at the 2015 World Championships in Aiguebelette in France.

Chris Pennell, who won the headline Sports Personality of the Year (SPOTY) honour sponsored by Bullivant Media, carried on his success into 2015 as his last-gasp try helped Worcester Warriors clinch promotion and a return to the Aviva Premiership as they prevailed in a thrilling play-off final against Bristol.

The Herefordshire & Worcestershire Sports Awards, which take place at Warriors’ Sixways Stadium on November 4, showcase and recognise not only the best sporting talent across the two counties but also those who deserve recognition for their dedication to sport within their community.

Sports Partnership Herefordshire & Worcestershire director, Steve Brewster, said: “It’s always pleasing to hear those who have been previously honoured at the awards are still doing well in their chosen sports.

“We believe this event is the chance to honour our local sportsmen and women, coaches, volunteers, clubs and officials and to continue to support them on their sporting journeys.”

There is still time to send us your suggestions as to who you think the panel should consider to make the shortlist for this year’s SPOTY award. E-mail your comments to [email protected].

Whether your choice of sportsman or woman competes individually or as part of a team, as long as they are an elite athlete who competes in their chosen sport at the highest level and either play sport, live or are from the two counties, then please let us know who you would like to be considered by the panel before the choices are put to a public vote in the months leading up to awards night.
