New lady captain Frances has a great backing

BROADWAY Golf Club’s ladies’ section came out in force to support their new lady captain Frances Friend as she hosted her annual ‘drive-in’.

Having already successfully completed her first tee shot of 2020 at the weekend with the other club captains, Frances was well rehearsed and began the occasion with a splendid tee shot sent hurtling down the middle of the fairway.

Supporting ladies were given the opportunity to guess the distance and this was successfully calculated by Linda Carruthers and Liz Smith, who received prizes for guessing just one yard either side of the impressive 155 yards achieved.

As soon as Frances’ superb drive was dispatched, 33 ladies then joined her to compete in their first competition of the year – a nine-hole Stableford off both the first and tenth tees.

The weather could have been kinder as high winds and showers prevailed throughout the morning, but this failed to dampen the enthusiasm of all competitors.

Winning the front nine was Irene Hawkes who brought in a magnificent 20 points. Pat Beaman came a close second with an excellent 18 points, ahead of Debbie Donoghue in third with 16.

Jayne Telfer also scored 16 points to make her the worthy winner of the back nine competition.

After the game, ladies retired to the warmth and comfort of the clubhouse for some welcome refreshments when Frances was delighted to announce donations amounting to £105 were received to launch her charity fund for the Children’s Air Ambulance.
