MORETON-IN-MARSH Tennis Club have been named South Warwickshire Summer Tennis League ‘Club of the Year’ having been awarded the King Cup.

After considering the qualifying matters, league secretary Corin Bishop was left with ten clubs in the running and these were whittled down to a shortlist of four – Alcester, Bidford, Pershore and Moreton-in-Marsh.

There was little to choose between them but, with Moreton entering a record three teams this year and having an excellent disciplinary record over this and earlier years, added to the fact the other teams had already won this award previously, the decision was to award the title to Moreton.

Their top men’s A team just missed out on promotion to the Premier Division after finishing third in Division One. Meanwhile, Moreton’s B team ended their season joint third in Division Four and their new C team completed their inaugural season in seventh place in Division Five.

Congratulations go to the club and long-serving captains Brian Lomas for the A team, Chris Steele for the B team and veteran Terry Parkes for the C team, plus Gavin Smithers who served on the league committee for three years.

Moreton will be presented with the trophy at the league’s 30th anniversary presentation dinner at No72 Fine Indian Dining, Bidford, on Tuesday, September 17.
