Mooney and Preen win latest Winter League contest

Liam Moakes 8th Jan, 2019

A SCORE of 41 points proved enough for James Mooney and Richard Preen to win the fifth round of Broadway Golf Club men’s Winter League.

It was a mild, bright morning and the course played exceptionally well, helping teams record some impressive scores in the Foursomes match. With each team member driving on alternate holes and then continuing play with just one ball to the green, there was some excellent golf played.

Justin Loram and Adrian Bennett finished second on countback and third and fourth respectively with 40 points were Dave Patten and Doug Mclldowie and Adam Barnfield and Andrew Sutton.

All 50 pairs now look forward to round six later in the month.

Following the Winter League, Broadway’s new captains celebrated their inauguration with the annual Captains Drive-in.

Club captain Andy Basford, ladies’ captain Irene Hawkes, senior captain John Friend and junior captain Max Carter were all determined to begin their 2019 year of captaincy with magnificent drives in front of the gathered crowd.

Carter was first on the tee and demonstrated all his youth and agility by sending his colossal drive off towards the 250-yard marker.

Friend was next in line, sending a glorious shot into the distance, followed by Hawkes who began off her year in style with a superb drive.

Basford brought up the rear with a superb display of controlled driving, coolly dispatching the ball down the middle of the fairway.
