Mixed magic at Evesham

Evesham Editorial 6th Dec, 2017   0

TWO mixed Christmas competitions were staged at Evesham Golf Club on Saturday.

On a milder morning, with unexpected rain, 20 players set off in teams of three (one team of two) for the 8am shotgun start.

In barely full light, teams were in good spirits, only dampened by the rain, and each enjoyed a golf stop whilst passing the 4th or 13th for a deserved refreshment of warm mulled wine and mince pies.

Clearly this helped as all teams were eager to set off again and complete their round. Some good Stableford scores came in, with the winning team being Ian Tyrrell, Granthan Speake and Carol Yates with 80 points, followed by Phil Wheeler, Stuart Berry and Jenny Masser in second with 78 points and Alan Dufty, Jill Cleary and Steve Deaking third with 75 points.

Birdies were Tyrrell on the 4th and 7th, Chris Jewkes on the 9th and Steve Young on the 15th.

After a break in the weather, now hoping for better conditions, the 12 noon shotgun start had 30 players.

Sadly, after only an hour, they encountered mizzly rain for the rest of their round. Again warm mulled wine and mince pies were served to help them on their way and some fine scores came in together with a high number of birdies.

The winning team was Geoff Wellens, Marlene Billings and John Hutcheon with 88 Stableford points and second with 87 points on countback were Mark New, Jerry Cain and Jean Bevan, followed by Ruth Masters, Stephanie Bartlett and Dave Mullett in third.

Birdies were Wellens on the 13th, Will Sellar 6th, Richard Curnock 14th, New 7th & 14th, Mike Abraham 6th, Lee Lambourne 16th and Geoff Insall on 1st, 15th & 17th.

Captain Brian Osborne presented the prizes after the morning and afternoon competitions and it was great to see the clubhouse vibrant with happy and contented players sharing their good shots (and not so) with all.

Thanks go to Pete Lawrence for providing the mince pies and helpers Beryl Osborne, Audrey Tompkins, Enid Walker and Hana Reid.
