Megan strides to prestigious crown

EVESHAM teenager Megan Smith claimed a top title as the sun shone upon Arena 3 for the third day of competition at the British Showjumping National Championships, held at the NAEC Stoneleigh in Warwickshire.

The National Club Pony Championships were the order of the day, starting with the 70cm Championship which was won by Caitlin Wornham from Knebworth, Hertfordshire, riding Leyeswick Ricky Boy.

Following on was the National Club Pony 80cm Championship and the title went to 14-year-old Megan, riding Woodfield Boo.

The Vale rider qualified for the British Showjumping National Championship with Boo last year but sadly the pair could not make it due to lameness.

Megan has held off selling Boo until the end of September so they could come out and compete this year and do all the things they did not manage to do last year due to his injury.

The pair also took the highest placed Riding Club Member sash for the class. Runner-up in the class was Harri Baker and Heolyrhedyn Element, who were just five hundredths of a second behind Megan and Boo.

The third Championship in Arena 3 was the National Club Pony 90cm Championship in which Harri Baker and Heolyrhedyn Element took the win.

The pair had a six-and-a-half-hour drive from Morpeth, Northumberland, to compete in the Championships but produced an excellent and careful final round.

In second place was Aoife Rew from Little Horkesley, Colchester, riding Drishoge Lotto. Aoife and Drishoge Lotto then went on to win the final class of the day, the National Club Pony 1.00m Championship.

The British Showjumping Club leagues provide club members with the opportunity to focus on heading their regional league table within their chosen height category and also qualify for their respective championship with the goal of claiming a National Championship title at the British Showjumping National Championships.
