Lucas’ late winner fires improving Robins up to 12th

JAMIE LUCAS headed home in the 85th minute to fire Evesham United to a hard-fought 1-0 victory at high-flying Paulton Rovers on Wednesday.

Lucas got on the end of Jordan Lymn’s cross to nod home a precious goal which lifts Neil Hunt’s men into 12th place in Southern League Division One South heading into Saturday’s home game against Cinderford Town, which is followed by another home fixture on Monday (7.30pm) when Melksham Town arrive at the Jubilee.

In an even first half Evesham’s Josh Hunt had a volley well saved by Paulton keeper Aaron Sainsbury before Lewis Clayton denied Tom Llewellyn at the other end after a swift counter-attack.

Rovers’ Will Hailston had an effort deflected wide before Lucas blazed wildly over the bar.

The hosts missed an excellent chance to take the lead shortly into the second half when Lee Ibraham’s low cross from the left was mistimed by Ryan Gay who had the goal at his mercy.

Lucas continued to threaten as he again tested Sainsbury before Rovers hit back as Gay’s shot was blocked and Hailston had a low drive well held by Clayton.

Lucas then struck with the game’s decisive moment before Rovers threw the kitchen sink at the visitors but it was to no avail as Evesham left north Somerset with maximum points.
