Long-standing Pershore Hospital Cup is officially wound up

Evesham Editorial 25th Jan, 2018   0

THE PERSHORE Hospital Cup, which was disbanded this season, has now closed its books after more than 100 years of existence.

Secretary Alan Barnett has written cheques totalling £986.20 to various local charities and this draws to a conclusion the bank account in the Pershore Hospital Cup name.

Barnett is fearful for the future of local football after recent appeals for staffing help for the Hospital Cup fell on deaf ears.

He said: “A word of warning for local football regarding people running local teams who are not getting any younger. Who will run these teams in the future, putting in hours of dedication necessary to keep these clubs going?

“If the response we had when we asked for people to help is anything to go by, then I would be concerned for the future of local football.”

Barnett did, however, reflect on the success of the competition over the years.

He added: “There are many people over the years who have worked hard to raise money for local charities, including Cyril Millward, Gerald Voss and Ernie Aldington who are no longer with us and John Pouncett, Brian Collett, Peter Wonfor, Tony Bradstock and current chairman Terry Conway.

“Our president Richard Williams has supported the competition for many years and, if not for the support of the Twilight section of Pershore Rotary Club over the last two or three seasons, the competition would have folded earlier.

“I would like to thank all the sponsors over the years, especially Judy Gardner of Eckington Manor Cookery School.”
